Opening on June 17 · 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The artist and curator William Jourdain, aka Automatisme, was invited by EXPRESSION to organize the group digital art exhibition Les paysages autres (Other Landscapes). For this multifaceted exhibition, Jourdain took on the mission of presenting reflections on various issues in contemporary art, manifested through the question, “How do we augment and remix the details of nature?” In response, the artists express themselves through audio and visual digital works, concerts, and talks. Les paysages autres brings together artists who work at different cultural institutions in teaching, education, philosophy, and art history, and at record stores. Most publish albums with the influential German label Mille Plateaux, which has been devoted to post-techno electronic music since the early 1990s.

Myriam Boucher’s music video is taken from an audiovisual performance titled The Tuning of the Fields. In this work, Boucher seeks to evoke moments of solitude and wonder: the sense of time suspended that inhabits us when we listen to cricket songs, eyes closed, at night in a meadow. Drawing on her memories, this work is inspired by the aural landscape of her childhood in the Montérégie region.

Thomas Köner’s sound installation exemplifies the Ultrablack of Music current at Mille Plateaux. It is multidirectional and aims for non-representation. Even though the frequencies are immeasurable and countless, we feel them: they vibrate in us. This installation is free of bass frequencies and tonal superstructure; no longer in the range of music, it breaks with dominant electro stylings.

The digital sculpture created by Marilou Lyonnais Archambault probes the potential for merging the digital universe with the world of the living. By projecting images onto plant matter to form a bas-relief, Lyonnais presents a craggy and modulable Internet space that mimics boreal landscapes. In her work, she explores the impact of digital consumption on natural landscapes.

In his photographic superimpositions, Stefan Paulus merges objects as philo-fiction or photo-fiction, inviting viewers to invent their own theoretical operations and rules and to come to terms with a chaotic universe formed of multiple representations. Paulus challenges the possibilities for imagining and experiencing the landscapes around us.

Presented at Jardin Daniel A. Séguin (JDAS), William Jourdain’s installation is a dense, extensive soundscape. Generated from sound recordings captured in spring 2023 at JDAS – the very site where it would later be presented – this work will be broadcast at the same volume as that of the environment in which it is installed, but in a season different from that of the original recordings.

The exhibition’s theme is defined by sensitivity to and documentation of natural landscapes. The works form interstices between the human gaze and nature, resulting in imaginary spaces and other realities – the construction of a utopian alternative natural landscape, mixed and surreal. These works propose an uncontrollable living-together between sublime and chaotic; their goal is to slow time, to offer a moment of naturalistic reflection.

A critical text entitled "Ultrablack Landscape" by Achim Szepanski, founder of the Force Inc. and Mille Plateaux record labels and editor at non.copyriot.com, will be available at EXPRESSION.
