NIKOLAUS GEYRHALTER
Nikolaus Geyrhalter was born in 1972 in Vienna and is a filmmaker and scriptwriter by profession. He has made more than twenty documentary films, in which he examines the customs and realities of various corners of the world. At ORANGE, Geyrhalter presents Our Daily Bread/Notre pain quotidien ( 2005 ), a documentary that will be shown continuously in the exhibition gallery and which depicts, without any voice-over commentary or interviews, the major industrial food production sites in Europe. For two years, Geyrhalter positioned his camera at the centre of the operations of the largest European food producers, thereby providing viewers with access to inaccessible areas. He filmed their employees, sites and various production processes, creating a documentary which closely examines the food industry and modern Western civilisation. A poetic work, free of propaganda and in which the images speak for themselves, Our Daily Bread shows how productivity, developed in response to over-consumption, has removed us from the reality of our lives.
