Fragments et figures
November 17 to December 23, 2007
Born in Santiago, Chile, Rafael Sottolichio explores painting's diverse modalities of expression using snapshots that become part of the creative process. In an ongoing reflection on the manufacture of images, his work exploits the narrative potential of the tension that occurs between figurative representation and structured space. To achieve this, he stages characters in real or totally imaginary environments. Whether realistic or merely suggested by a silhouette, these figures create peculiar situations through their attitude to their surroundings. The manner of painting thus contributes to the construction of a dialectic in which the narrativity serves to confirm or refute a relationship of tension between humans and their environment. The exhibition at EXPRESSION offers an overview of the past decade's work, based on a mise en abyme of the various photographic syntaxes.
